Statement
My ceramic
sculpture and installation is informed by the intersection
between science and humanity. Certain imagery and
notions from science find their way into the clay
through patterns and forms. I am inspired by the radical
changes in perspective that science has given us vis-a-vis
our relationship with the natural world and humanity,
and how that perspective has determined how we understand,
nourish and reflect on our bodies, minds and spiritual
selves.
The simplicity of design, repetition of form, and
references to nature are
also derived from the aesthetic sensibilities of Japan.
Having received my
introduction to clay in Japan, where I spent two years
learning traditional
pottery techniques, my work is indelibly marked by
that encounter.
