“myselfportraits,
ode to icons and other absurdities,” series II
In
2008, I began a new photographic series using myself
to depict iconic females from history and fiction.
My new work is a continuation of this project.
For
me, this work is a personal as well as subjective journey
into the lives of women of courage who had the pluck
and the determination to remain true to their beliefs
despite the immense obstacles that they endured in their
lives.
When
I make each picture, my intention is never to impersonate
but to try to embody these women. These photographs
are never “taken.” They are given to me generously,
and sometimes reluctantly, by these icons.
The
photographs are multi-layered. I conceptualize
a pictorial background that distills my knowledge of
these symbolic women into a single image. Backdrops
are then hand painted, often referencing paintings and
documentary images.
In
the meantime, costumes and props are gathered to create
tableaux. The"stage" is set and the
photographs are exposed and printed on watercolor
paper in various black and white tones depending on
my concept. Each portrait is selectively hand
colored using artist pencils and soft pastels, making
each print an original work of art.
