Artist Statement In an ongoing exploration of the relationship between people and plants, this group of drawings takes a closer look at the five senses and the way we experience our environment. Beautiful, delicious, fragrant plants engage our senses, but it is not their job. It is coincidence that the sensory input of plants affects us at all. Scents, shapes, colors, sounds, textures and flavors are all geared toward one thing: species survival – theirs, not ours. Textures and colors calibrate absorption of light and moisture; scent and markings attract pollinators; flavor and sound relate to ripening, decay and dehydration, which lead to dispersal of seeds and start the whole cycle again. We are lucky bystanders to botany, connected by our five senses. Having trained in the centuries-old tradition of botanical illustration, portraying plants with scientific accuracy and detail is a perfect starting point for my work. From there I like to push past tradition toward a fresh point of view. Links For further information visit |
